Beyond Cancer’s Shadow

Beyond Cancer’s Shadow captures two children’s journeys through cancer remission. Although their days in treatment are in the past, the visual narrative illustrates that the echoes of their past battles are present in their daily lives. The photo story highlights the newfound perspectives these children have as a result of their cancer treatment.

Brayden Enzor, 15

Brain Tumor

Brayden began fishing at the age of four under the guidance of his grandfather. “My time in the hospital made me more of an introvert, especially when I lost my hair. It became challenging for me to step outside. Going fishing and being alone has been something I’ve been doing that makes me not think about it as much,” Brayden said.

Brayden catches bass at a small pond by his neighborhood every few weeks. Following his battle with brain cancer, fishing emerged as an outlet that helped him navigate the stresses of readjusting to normal life. This spring, Brayden aspires to join Millbrook High School’s baseball team.

Charlie Galuten, 8

Leukemia

Charlie’s bond with Lucky blossomed after he wished for a dog as his Make-A-Wish gift. "I could have had unlimited fast track passes for Disney World, or I could have gone to Hawaii, but I chose Lucky because all I wanted was him. He always calms me down when I am sad, and he sniffs my elbow a lot which really cheers me up," Charlie shares.

Most leukemia treatments require steroid medication along with chemotherapy to help destroy leukemia cells. Amidst the heavy mood swings, anxiety and nightmares brought on by the steroid treatment, only Lucky could provide support and moderate Charlie’s mood swings. Lucky remains a constant source of comfort even after the curtains close on his treatment days.
